Customer Rating: Summary: Great french film noire Comment: I first found this movie in the VHS area of an old video store and just got it because it was cheap. Once I saw that it was subtitled english I almost turned it off but was glad that I didn't. The two outcasts that triumph over the corporate office or the slimball club owner. You can't help not cheering for this quirky couple. I could not believe my luck when I found this movie on DVD and for so cheap. Rent it if you can not buy it
Customer Rating: Summary: Superlative, sexy film Comment: This film is as good as Girl on the Bridge, an honor I save for very few films, and would make a good rainy day French film festival in your home with friends.
Customer Rating: Summary: Read My Lips: a relationship stronger than words. Comment: Read my Lips (Sur mes lèvres) is a 2001 noir-ish French psycho-sexual thriller by Jacques Audiard (The Beat That My Heart Skipped), starring Vincent Cassel (Eastern Promises; Irreversible, married to actress Monica Bellucci) as Paul Angeli, and Emmanuelle Devos as Carla, a nearly-deaf, unappreciated, 35-year-old secretary, who lacks the respect of her coworkers at the construction company where she works in suburban Paris. Neither character is perfect; in fact, would describe both as losers. Carla is dowdy, lonely and desperate. Despite the angelic connotations of his surname ("Angeli"), Paul is a shaggy ex-con on parole. In a plot that combines disability, insecurity, love, revenge, and suspense, Audiard's film chronicles the intimate relationship that develops between the two office workers. Together they make a fascinating couple. To Carla, Paul is the cure to her loneliness and boredom. To Paul, Carla is his femme fatale; his bad girl. "The relationship of Carla and Paul is not about obvious sex but about a communion of two souls--and sex," Roger Ebert writes in his review of the film. "A lesser movie would have had them in bed by the halfway mark, in an obligatory sex scene of little motivation, interest or purpose. Instead, 'Read My Lips' is really interested in these two characters." Audiard uses hand-held camera shots and shadowy lighting techniques to generate a sense of anxiety in a film I highly recommend.

Customer Rating: Summary: a strange love story Comment: read my lips is a film hitchcock would have been proud of, it is a heart-stopping thriller and one like i've never seen.. This film unwinds slowly, as another reviewer stated, but once you are caught in the web you know you are seeing a film like no other.. It is an unnerving nail-bighter while at the same time it is the tale of two souls who are so troubled and out of place.. The main character who is deaf without her hearing aid device is a woman who craves attention so much that she gets involved with a most strange criminal plot.. Her search for love is something we can relate to - but we also know that the character she falls for is far less than perfect.. I will not disclose any more plot elements.. I was just greatly pleased with this movie..
Customer Rating: Summary: Foreign Film At It's Best Comment: Great thriller. Very interesting story. If you don't mind subtitles, which you don't usually notice in a good movie, you'll love the movie. A touch of the erotic, a couple good violent scenes, criminals, clubs, robbery, & a great in depth analysis of a deaf women with not friends (or boyfriends) & a career criminal trying to get back on track after being released from prison. Not to mention his psycho paroll officer. See it!

Carla is beginning to chafe at the limitations of her career and is looking to move up. But as a 35-year-old woman with a hearing deficiency, she is not sure how. Into her life comes Paul Angeli, a new trainee. At 25, he is completely unskilled, but Carla covers for him when the need arises because of his other qualities - he's a thief fresh out of jail, very good-looking and maybe of some use to her. Starring Vincent Cassel (Birthday Girl, Brotherhood of the Wolf, Crimson Rivers).
