Customer Rating: Summary: Joni and Jaco at their best Comment: Jaco Pastorius was arguably at this best during this era of playing with Joni Mitchell. Joni, in turn, was performing some of her strongest material ever. The band she put together for Shadows And Light were truly jazz masters, and this pushed the music into ever exploratory realms. The material is beautifully presented and the musicianship is exceptional.
On a personal note, when I saw this performance on TV when it first aired, it was my first time to see Jaco Pastorius play. He redefined what a bassist was for me and it still stands for me as some of the best bass playing I've ever heard. Deep groove, melodic and funky. Enjoy!
Customer Rating: Summary: Great stuff Comment: A friend had this dvd and I had to get a copy myself. I've been a big fan of Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays since the 1st group album and seeing them with Joni, Jaco (one of the greatest bass players ever) Brecker on sax, this is just an over all fantastic live show, that I wish I could have seen in person. It would have been nice to see better camera angles on the musicians, but then again, this is supposed to be focused on Joni.
Customer Rating: Summary: Great Concert, Frustrating Editing. Comment: Being a musician, (and with a band that has some of the greatest musicians in the world), the need to be "eclectic" and add video
bites (while they may match the particular song ('s)) was a bit
frustrating for me. So, Like my fellow reviewers, I would rather
see just the band. After all, these are musicians who would never
play again, (due to Jaco's untimely passing). However;, the sound
and picture is great, as are all the tracks. Joni has a unique style
that compliments this "supergroup" of inspiring musicians. Four stars.
Customer Rating: Summary: Hi Friend - Shawdows and Light Comment: Although two of my favorite Joni albums were Hissing Lawns and Hejira, Joni "evolved beyond me" with Don Juan's Daughter and Mingus. I was so disappointed in Mingus, I GAVE it away. Further, I resolved never to buy another Joni ablum without a beginning-to-end listen.
While fooling around on You Tube a couple months ago, I found a few Joni videos doing some classics and determined that some were from Shadows and Light.
When originally released (ca 1980?), I had passsed-over this one 'cause I thought it was from her in-accessible later years. Too bad for me.
This is (mostly) the Joni I enjoy - She's backed by Pat Metheny and Jaco Pastorius (among others). It's like finding a (younger)old friend.
Customer Rating: Summary: At last Comment: Its wonderful to be able to watch what is one of Joni's best concerts. She is as wonderful as always.
