Summary: A tight professional performance
Comment: Phil Collins' horn-powered group is tight and professional, and this 2-DVD set is an excellent value. Not only do you get a complete concert with surround sound and widescreen video, but you also get an 80% complete collection of Phil's videos and also a documentary. Unfortunately, the video clips must be accessed individually, and there isn't a way to watch the videos play as a continuous program.
Collins is backed by mostly the same instrument players who were heard on "Live and Loose in Paris", excepting that Bassist Leland Sklar returns, replacing Nathan East.
The set list focuses of the popular "No Jacket Required","But Seriously" & "Dance Into The Light" albums, though the few subsequent songs included cause the pace to briefly drag.
Collins seldom has adequate on-stage duet partners to re-create the Marylin Martins part on "Separate Lives" & the Philip Bailey part on "Easy Lover", and this show is no exception. On "Separate Lives", Collins(in this show) has a throaty,low-pitched, masculine-sounding African American woman to duet with, and while she's a skillful singer, she takes too many melodic and phrasing liberties with "Separate Lives". This lady, and a male background vocalist take turns trying to replace Philip Bailey on "Easy Lover", but Bailey's high falsetto notes are simply out of these singers' ranges, and they have no option but to sing the song quite differently. This is one area where Nathan East is missed. He could easily reproduce the Philip Bailey part, and with good reason:East co-wrote "Easy Lover".
There are very occasional moments during this show, where Collins' very highest notes sound slightly thinner or more nasal than in the past. Collins hits all the required notes(though in a few instances avoiding holding them for as long), but from the way Collins occasionally grimaces in the first half of the show, it is obvious that it is not as effortless to reach these high notes in his mid-50's as it was in his mid-30's.(in a subsequent Genesis reunion tour, Collins dropped the keys of most of the songs, de-tuning the songs as much as 3 keys)
Don't get me wrong, this is a generally excellent, well performed, recorded and filmed show, and the two-disc set is value packed, but if you don't have a Phil Collins DVD yet, I'd advise you to start with "Live and Loose in Paris", then buy this set. This is a fine farewell from Collins. It's good to quit at the top.

Comment: I have always wanted to see Phil Collins live but time and circumstances conspired against me. While sadly he will not be touring anymore, this dvd for me is as good as it gets to the sights, sounds, and energy of a Phil Collins concert.

Summary: Seriously, Phil Live
Comment: There is no doubt about Phil Collins this past year. He has had a marvelous revival of his work with his days performing as a part of Genesis. Not only did he perform for the first time with them in 15 years, but the sound of Phil, Mike Rutherford and Tony Banks sounded even better than ever. Especially with their catalog being fully restored past and present. That feeling has also been a bit sad for his solo efforts though. He just embattled a tough divorce, and his work with the recent Broadway musical version of Disney's Tarzan hasn't didn't really deliver to those fans that still want Phil to be n their hearts. But, that alone may be as it was, there are still many fans who want him to return to touring on his own. That is shown strong from his last tour back in 2004.

Phil Collins recent concert DVD, Finally: The First Farewell Tour is a 2 disc DVD that reflected highlights from an dynamic concert in Paris he performed, promoting for his 2002 album, Testify. Phil's performance was assertive, and brought out a lot of fun and excitement from his classics including Against All Odds, Take Me Home, and the fun fulfilled Something Happened On The Way To Heaven. The songs sound great, but the concert alone isn't enough here to tide Phil Collins fans alone. The DVD set includes a lot of extras, including music videos for his biggest hits including A Groovy Kind Of Love, Don't Lose My Number, as well as some of his lesser-known songs like Hang In Long Enough, Dance Into The Light, and his cover of Cyndi Lauper's True Colors. The extras bring in a lot more appeal that works well not just in the price, but as a great glimpse at how humorous and eclectic Phil has been over the years.

All in al, while there have been so many music video DVD's that have lacked heart, and haven't delivered the effort within their price, it is nice to know that Phil Collins is still serious enough to hit a home run with this concert. My one gripe is that I wish Phil could've performed some of other great songs like Everyday, I Wish It Would Rain Down and Don't Let Him Steal Your Heart Away. Nevertheless, this is still a remarkable reintroduction to one of the most serious artists to have ever come out of the 80's. Phil Collins' Finally: The First Farewell Tour is one of the best live concert DVD's I really think is a great addition to your DVD library.

Comment: While this dvd is packed with extras, the concert is the only thing I have a problem with.
The performance is good, but not the best. His past concert videos display much better energy and rawness...
The problem is with the set list itself.
It's pretty much a "greatest hits" album done live..and didn't we have this in 1991 with his album "Serious hits live"??

I would have liked to have heard some lesser-played album cuts in the set like "thru these walls", "Inside out", "I cannot believe it's true", "Don't let him steal your heart away".
Why does Phil think people just want the obvious, over-played "HITS"?

(the same thing happened with the recent Genesis tour--too many hits--but that's another review..lol)

Ironically, the best thing on the entire DVD is the "wild card", which is a 20-minute SIZZLING performance of AWB's "Pick up the pieces" with 5 stellar sax players--PUTTING IT DOWN! as well as George Duke on piano..who churns out an amazing solo as well.

The dvd is worth it for this performance and the videos, but not so much for the concert.

Summary: Finally ... an excellent Concert DVD
Comment: This DVD-set is awesome. Ok, Phil is slowly getting old - but the music and the recording quality (both audio and video) are top notch. Believe me. I own several Concert DVD's from other bands. The audio quality on this one is unsurpassed. The song selection will please long time fans and those who are not. I totally recommend it
