Summary: The best Live Harry Connick Jr
Comment: I've been a big fan of Harry Connick Jr for quite some time and even bought the cd's during his phase of going "funk" (Star Turtle). This disc is my favorite of every DVD and CD that I have of him. I've even been to one of his concerts and still say this disc is better.
The band is an arrangement of the best musicians around and there are plenty of solos where you can see them display their talent.
If your a Harry Connick Jr fan, make sure you dont pass this one up.

Summary: Don't let this bar you from enjoying it, but......
Comment: I got this DVD as a present from a friend, who was very impressed by it.
Regrettably I cannot share his enthousiasm for this kind of 'big mouth, big show, no content' type of entertainment. Mind you, I don't have a problem with 'pure entertainment' as such, but this one is simply too empty for me.
Main criticisms :
1. Music isn't even remotely original and selected _only_ to please the audience.
2. Arrangements are at times completely out of sync with the song itself (example : "Bear necessities", which is an up-tempo song, is performed as a sort of crooner-ballad. This does no work imo)
3. Connick acts and moves very animatedly, but this is very plainly only the show; he gives big-gestured cues to his orchestra members, but frequently cues too early or too late and the (very tight) bigband plays completely on its own and sort of ignores Connick's 'band leading'.
4. Connick's playing and singing is not much to write home about; Vocally he's a not-quite-so-gifted Sinatra clone. Adequate enough, but not really interesting. His piano playing is restricted to playing an occasional chord, preferrably the easy chords. I play some piano myself and even though I am currently completely underrehearsed and underpracticed, I could play that kind of stuff within 10 minutes.
5. All the above is stuff which bothers _me_, but which should not necessarily bother everyone. What I think is quite scandalous though, is that if you look at the DVD closely, it's visible that Connick is PLAYBACKING SHAMELESSLY. Lip movements are not synchrous with the sound (this is not due to asynchronicity of soundtrack and video...it's Connick playbacking !) and his lip movements are also occasionally out-of-sync with musicians coming forward to play a solo. But -even worse- he is kind of swinging with the microphone in his hand and while doing this the mic often moves all over the place and he extends it so far away that the it's improbable that the mic picks up his voice. However...all of this moving around is completely not audible on the soundtrack. While this by itself is not 100% proof that he's playbacking, it is highly improbable that one is able to move the microphone all over the place without hearing it back in the audio track.
Summarizing, while this DVD might be highly enjoyable if you're looking for some entertainment (and don't let my review put you off if you feel happy with this DVD), it's simply too fake and too artificial for my taste.

Summary: A Sight And Sound Experience You Don't Want To Miss!
Comment: I recently purchased this DVD and I really enjoy watching it. Harry Connick Jr. is the consummate musician and showman, and the video and music from this excellent DVD only reinforce the notion that he is the best jazz musician of his time. Almost single handedly he has managed to create a new fresh awareness to these classics, and even now in 2004 he continues to reacquaint the world to the beautiful songs from the Great American Songbook. His unique interpretations of these timeless songs brings them back to life, and proves once more that these perfectly crafted tunes will last forever. The camera work and sound mixing on this DVD is well done and it really communicates to the audience the feeling of being in the middle of a Harry Connick Jr. concert without disrupting the viewing and listening experience. This is a great concert DVD that you will enjoy for many years to come.
If you LOVE listening to GREAT CROONERS and BIG BAND SWING, I would also recommend, Monte Procopio "Swingin' With Style" CD. He is another great crooner that can really SWING and deserves a listen. Buy both these artists, you can't go wrong!
