Customer Rating: Summary: True to the Original Comment: I am not reviewing the Blue Ray edition, having not seen it (yet). However, regarding the two different versions of the movie it is interesting to note that both are based on the 1938 novella 'Who Goes There?' by John W. Campbell. Here's the fun: the original Howard Hawks movie changed things up quite a lot; it bears only a slight resemblance to the novella. The newer Carpenter movie is very close to the original story line.
'He darted back to his bunk in Paradise House, to return almost immediately with a heavy .45 revolver and an ice-ax. He hefted both gently as he started for the corridor toward Dogtown.
"It blundered down the wrong corridor - and landed amoung the huskies. Listen - the dogs have broken their chains -"
The half-terrorized howl of the dog pack had changed to a wild hunting melee. The voices of the dogs thundered in the narrow corridors, and through them came a low rippling snarl of distilled hate.'
I can highly recommend all three - novella, and both films. Quite a sophisticated premise of 'alien invasion' for a 1938 story, and both movies are rousing good fun.
PS - Watch the skies!
Customer Rating: Summary: The Thing (Blu-Ray) Comment: Great Sci-fi movie. Great gift for sci-fi fans. Clear and crisp on Blu-Ray, almost like being in the movie theatre. Get the popcorn. Fast delivery. Thank you.
Customer Rating: Summary: Would have given 5 stars but Universal down graded the features. Comment: The movie itself is 5 stars no question, but this review is for this particular release of it.
I love John Carpenters "The Thing", but Universal Studios should be ashamed of themselves for releasing a Blue Ray version of the film with almost ALL of the extras REMOVED.
Inexcusable.
It's a shame Universal chose to do this, since this Blue Ray's picture quality and sound are both great.
Buy the Uk Blue Ray release instead. It includes the many extras not found in this US version.
Does Universal Studios value their UK customers more than their US customers for some reason?
Customer Rating: Summary: AWESOME!!! Comment: Not only was this a classic horror/sci-fi movie, but on Blu-ray it brings out the gore in such gory detail! IT'S AWESOME! If you're a fan of this movie to begin with, it will be a 100x better on Blu-ray! Get it you won't be dissappointed!!!
Customer Rating: Summary: Groundbreaking Makeup Effects Comment: This film was a turning point in monster movie effects that still influences horror/fantasy imagery to this day in films, art, and comics.

Horror-meister John Carpenter (Halloween, Escape from New York) teams Kurt Russell's outstanding performance with incredible visuals to build this chilling version of the classic The Thing. In the winter of 1982, a twelve-man research team at a remote Antarctic research station discovers an alien buried in the snow for over 100,000 years. Soon unfrozen, the form-changing alien wreaks havoc, creates terror and becomes one of them.
