This courage and restraint has sadly been negated by the addition of the new material, or, more accurately, the material originally deleted. The effect is, to my mind, disastrous, reducing a vibrant, lilting film to a soap-opera which leaves little to the imagination. Now, instead of the poignant yearning of the original we have middle-age stalking, sordid fumbling in a parked car and rehashed declarations of undying love.
