Summary: amazing
Comment: I had first seemed this film in Prague and has become my old time favorite but had never seemed the director's cut which has brought closure to the Helena and Salvatore's love saga. I think this version is a must have for any fan of this masterpiece. If you do not have the director's cut; please get it, you will be treat it to a hold new dimmension of the director's point of view on what love and friendship really is.

Bravo, Bravo, Bravo.....

Summary: What's wrong with the new version...
Comment: The undoubted sentimentality of Cinema Paradiso was nicely balanced by the elliptical restraint of the original release; the mundane details of the central tragedy was left unsaid, a teenage love was left unconsummated, (much like the love-stories shown at Cinema Paradiso, thanks to the censoring local priest) deepening Salvatore's loss to the point that it acquired universal application and appeal, and became art.

This courage and restraint has sadly been negated by the addition of the new material, or, more accurately, the material originally deleted. The effect is, to my mind, disastrous, reducing a vibrant, lilting film to a soap-opera which leaves little to the imagination. Now, instead of the poignant yearning of the original we have middle-age stalking, sordid fumbling in a parked car and rehashed declarations of undying love. Fom poetry to tellenovella in one easy step. Che peccato!
